The Master of Arts (MA) in Learning and Teaching (with TESOL pathway) helps you to explore and address current learning, teaching and assessment practices. You will focus on deepening your understanding of learner-centred and technology-enhanced approaches underpinned by fundamental pedagogical concepts and theories. The study will be enhanced through a practical approach, so you can immediately put your learning into practice.

The course will offer you a life-changing experience through self-reflection and self-assessment. It will nourish your engagement in action-based research while promoting learner autonomy and life-long learning, and developing a professional attitude towards learning and teaching. It aims to provide a solid foundation in key concepts related to teaching methods and approaches to learning and teaching. The module provides participants with an opportunity to critically evaluate and reflect on their teaching practice, engage in professional dialogue, and share good practice with colleagues from various institutions.

Assessment: Assessment for this module is an oral critical conversation based on a written reflection.

The Teaching Practicum module provides an experiential learning opportunity for students to apply and extend their understanding of learning, teaching and assessment in authentic educational contexts. Through a combination of seminars, supervised teaching, observation and reflection, students integrate theory with practice and develop as reflective, evidence-informed professionals. The module promotes global citizenship and sustainable education, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education).

Assessment: Teaching Practicum Reflective Portfolio of 100 percent.

The module introduces the context for developing participants’ knowledge and broadening their understanding of current key issues in linguistics relevant to language teaching, with a focus on phonology and grammar. It enables personal understanding and evaluation of ways of categorising and describing English language systems at various levels, and of differing approaches to language analysis.

Assessment: Students are required to collect samples of authentic texts from learners, analyse the texts and identify learners’ linguistic needs in producing the texts.

To be awarded the MSc degree, students must complete 180 credits

  • Applicants should normally hold an undergraduate degree (or equivalent) from a recognised higher education institution with a minimum of a second lower class honours (2:2 or equivalent) in any subject area. Applicants without a formal higher education qualification or a formal qualification that is not at an equivalent academic standard, may be considered if the following conditions apply:
    They are or have been in employment where their role is in the area of the course and involves a high level of analysis and critical thinking.

  • Applicants must have:

    • Had their first or second degree (or equivalent) taught and assessed in English; or
    • IELTS with an overall score of at least 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in writing or another English Language Test recognised by the University of Westminster; or
    • The required pass level on the Preparatory Language Course for PG studies: Preparatory Language Course for Master's degree

    We accept the TOEFL (IBT (In person test) for entry to our programmes. We also accept TOEFL ‘My Best Scores’ where it relates to TOEFL iBT test results.

    • TOEFL score should be 88 overall with a minimum of 21 in Writing

    Please note that the TOEFL Home Edition (Online test) is not accepted for entry to WIUT degree programmes.

Elena Volkova

Elena has a Master of Education from the University of Exeter, College of St Mark and St John. Elena is Course Leader of the MA in Learning and Teaching course. She is an Editor in Chief of the ALT FL in Uzbekistan and a peer editor in SAP and SAGE.

Her professional interests include teachers’ professional learning, facilitation, mentoring, action research, assessment, technology enhanced learning, psychology related issues in education, disability inclusion, curriculum development and material design.
